Turkey slams Greece for criticism of Oruç Reis deployment

Greece’s criticism of Turkey conducting seismic surveying activities in the Greek continental shelf was a “baseless statement”, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.

Turkey redeployed its research vessel, the Oruç Reis, for a new hydrocarbon exploration mission in disputed waters in the eastern Mediterranean on Oct. 12, reigniting tensions with Greece and Cyprus over maritime boundaries and exploration rights.

"The area, where Oruç Reis has been conducting seismic survey activities, is located in its entirety within Turkish continental shelf, which has been defined on the basis of international law and accordingly notified to the United Nations," ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said in a statement.

Ankara had pulled back the ship from a previous mission in late September to lay the groundwork for exploratory talks backed by the European Union, mainly Germany.

"Turkey, as she has always been, is ready for dialogue and cooperation towards a solution based on equity, where the legitimate rights of both Turkey and Turkish Cypriots’ in the eastern Mediterranean are secured," Aksoy said.
