Turkey signals implementing stricter virus measures by September

Turkey’s Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Wednesday that the government was considering implementing stricter measures in September to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus if daily new infections continue to be above 1,000, Artı Gerçek news website reported

"We all see the increasing trend in the number of cases. If the rise continues at this rate, we may need to turn to strict measures that we do not want to experience again," Koca said during his daily press conference.

The numbers of daily COVID-19 cases spiked during the Muslim holiday of Eid al Adha because of the public’s complacent behaviour, he said.

"We know that our citizens are inevitably tired of the measures. But, if we ignore these rules, we may end up with an uncontrollable situation soon," the minister said.

Koca said the Health Ministry would draw up a new strategy, suggesting that re-imposing restrictions like the ones introduced in April which included weekend lockdowns and curfews for the elderly and the very young.
