General Haftar’s forces violating ceasefire – Tripoli government spokesman
Forces under General Khalifa Haftar, leader of the self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA), have continued to violate last week’s ceasefire by shelling areas near southern Tripoli, said Abdul Malik al Madani, a spokesman for Libya’s U.N.-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA).
Haftar’s forces randomly fired mortar shells on Sunday evening, al Madani told Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency, adding that GNA forces had neutralised the cannon used in the Salahaddin region to the south of Tripoli.
The shelling coincided with the end of peace talks in Berlin, where world leaders pledged to end the flow of weapons into Libya and military support to rival factions there, calling for a full ceasefire.
Haftar and the GNA’s leader Fayez al Sarraj both agreed to comply with the ceasefire.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Monday that Haftar agreed to the ceasefire discussed in Berlin, but did not sign the agreement.
