AKP, MHP downvote pro-Kurdish HDP motion calling for gender-based violence probe

Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and ally Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) on Tuesday voted against a motion by the country’s pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) calling for an investigation into violence against women.

The motion, put forth HDP Women’s Council Spokesperson Dilan Dirayet Taşdemir, was inspired by Nov. 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, news site T24 reported.

Taşdemir’s proposal called for an investigation against all acts of violence against women, the provision aid for victims and forming a database of such acts.

The AKP-MHP bloc, which maintains 340 seats of the total 550 in parliament, voted against the HDP’s proposed parliamentary investigation while centre-right Good (İYİ) Party abstained from the vote, T24 said.

“Women are being massacred every day, but we can’t talk about this openly and clearly. We have submitted tens of motions on this matter, but all of them have been downvoted by this Parliament,’’ HDP’s Taşdemir said.

Thirty-eight percent of women in Turkey are subject to violence from a partner in their lifetime, compared to about 25 percent in Europe, according toWorld Health Organization data.

Last year men murdered 440 women in Turkey, according to unofficial data, doubling the figure from 2012 when Ankara passed a law on preventing violence against women.

The brutal murder of a woman in the capital Ankara in August triggered Turkey-wide protests by women, raising pressure on Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and prompting President Tayyip Erdogan to say he would approve any parliamentary move to restore the death penalty in Turkey.

Thirty-eight-year-old Emine Bulut was stabbed by her former husband in front of her daughter. Footage of the killing, featuring her last words,  “I don’t want to die,” circulated on social media, sparking public outcry.
