Turkey issues new Navtex to send research ship to Cyprus
Turkey has issued a new advisory known as a Navtex, blocking off parts of the eastern Mediterranean, some of which overlaps with Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ), hours after Ankara said it would pause its oil and gas exploration activities, Kathimerini said on Tuesday.
Ankara is preparing to send its Barbaros vessel to explore for oil and gas off Cyprus in an area Greek Cypriots claim for its own, it said.
Turkey on Tuesday said it had suspended efforts for oil and gas exploration in the region after Ankara's plans last week to send research vessels around Greek islands of Rhodes, Karpathos, and Kastellorizo prompted criticism by the United States, France, and other European countries.
Turkey has been in a bitter dispute with Greece, Cyprus and the European Union over the island's exclusive economic zone and competing clams over drilling for hydrocarbons in the eastern Mediterranean.
